Ms. Porter

Ashyne James, Reporter

Brea Porter is a first grade teacher at School 43, and in 2019 was named the school’s Teacher of the Year.

Ms. Porter became a first grade teacher because she wanted to work with kids. She did not expect to be named the Teacher of the Year.

“I was really excited and very proud,” she said. “I was surprised, too. It felt good to be respected in the building.”

Ms. Porter went to Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. She said she joined IPS because she wanted to work at a public school.

Her students agree that she is a good teacher. When this reporter asked her why she is a good teacher, one of her students’ hands shot up, and the little girl said, “I know!

“You love all of us.”

Some of her other students had things to say about Ms. Porter, too:

“You help us to read and write and do math.”

“You are nice to us every day.”

“You are the nicest teacher.”

“All of that made me feel so good!” Ms. Porter said to the students. “Thank you, boys and girls!”

When Ms. Porter is out of school, she said she likes to paint and to bake.
